Content Description
The collection consists of scrapbooks and publications featuring Johnny Brown, who played football, baseball, and track at the Norfolk Division of William & Mary in the 1930s. The scrapbooks feature copies of photographs and newspaper articles of Brown's athletic activities. The collection also contains a biography of Brown, a history of the Norfolk Division football team, and a biography of wrestling coach Billy Martin.

Biographical / Historical
John Warren "Johnny" Brown, Jr. grew up in Norfolk and attended the Norfolk Division of William & Mary from 1937 to 1940, where he was a part of the football, baseball, and track teams. He later participated in athletics at Army as well as William & Mary. Brown served as a commander under General George C. Patton during World War II and continued to serve in the Army Reserve. After the war, Brown receied his bachelor's and master's degrees from William & Mary. He became a teacher at Granby High School, eventually serving as its principal, and coached the track and football teaams. Brown was inducted into the Old Dominion University Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and passed away on March 2, 2014.
