Scope and Contents This collection consists of two letters written to James S. Barron, a Virginia State Senator representing Norfolk. The first letter, dated 1913, is from the African-American men of the Bank Street Baptist Church thanking him for his service on his birthday. Also included is an autographed signed letter to Barron from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt thanking him for sending photographs of Confederate States of America ships. Scope and Contents

This collection contains a draft and an original manuscript of the Whittle Papers, original letters, and photocopies of original documents (with transcriptions), notes, books, and a copy of a photograph of Lt. William Conway Whittle. The collection was assembled by Warren Spencer, professor of history at Old Dominion University.

Abstract

Engineer in United States Navy from 1853 until 1912, when he was relieved from active duty as a Chief Engineer with the rank of Rear Admiral. During the Civil War he served on the U.S.S. Hartford, the flagship of Rear Admiral David Farragut, and was present at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. Collection consists of general correspondence, naval correspondence, diaries, and military papers from his service in the Navy.
